The Incense Journey is an approachable modern iteration of the Japanese incense ceremony (Kōdō.) During our time together, we will explore and discuss your experience of pure, all-natural woods and resins used by all cultures since the beginning of recorded history. The Japanese practice of the Kōdō ceremony dates back to the Heian period in Japan (794-1185.) The aristocracy cultivated refinement and appreciation for the finer things in life through fragrance and other arts that integrated with the experience, such as poetry, song, tea, calligraphy, art appreciation and creation, and meaningful discussions. We will journey in similar ways, but in the 21st century.
I will warm these differing fragrances on a heater as I introduce them. There is little to no smoke, with a transformative aroma that calms, centers, and opens you to expanded awareness and emotional healing. The Incense Journey and Japanese Kōdō ceremonies can be simple affairs, involving just a few people sitting in a room and enjoying the aroma of the incense. They can also be more formal, with special robes, incense utensils, and traditional rituals. At the Conscious Shala, we will keep to the simple. In all variations I offer, the goal is to cultivate a sense of mindfulness and appreciation for the present moment by enjoying the aroma of the incense.
